Acupuncture developed in Asia and has evolved over the last 5000 years.
Acupuncture Physicians are primary health care providers. You might go to an acupuncturist in the event of an infection, an injury, when you feel stressed, with a serious illness, degenerative disorders, emotional problems, and certain emergencies. You might choose to use an “A.P.” if you wanted to manage your health through natural methods, rather than with drugs or surgery. A.P.’s also assist people in building and maintaining good health whether or not they have symptoms showing.
Acupuncture Basics
The theoretical basis for holistic styles of acupuncture, includes the concepts of:
¨ Qi (pronounced Chee) which is energy, vitality, our raw materials for life.
¨ Yin and Yang, the observation of change. Yang prevailing daytime, heat, awakedness, growth and activity. Yin prevailing in nighttime, cold, calmness and stillness. All our cells need a good balance of rest and activity, for health.
¨ The nourishment of our cells, tissues and organs by the transportation of Qi through the body by a network of channels called meridians.
¨ The opportunity to change Qi by stimulation of particular points along these meridians.
¨ The diagnosis of body, mind and spirit to assess the root of the problem, and the use of the points to treat the underlying cause.
¨ You have the inherent ability to heal yourself, and if this is not happening, your Qi is not flowing well.
What Happens When I Come For Treatment?
We discuss your main health objective. Next we go over any other symptoms, and any issue with which you have difficulty.
Then we discuss your body’s functions and your medical and personal history.
We check the quality of twelve pulses at the wrists, temperature distribution in the body, the tongue’s condition, the color, hue and temperature of the skin, as well as the body’s odor. It is important that you wear neither perfume nor makeup when you come for treatment.
You may have questions, we will answer them honestly and as clearly as we can. We will let you know if we feel we can help you, if so we’ll recommend a treatment plan.
In most treatments we stimulate between 1 and 16 points. The needles we use are sterile, stainless steel, disposable, and extremely fine. There are instances when you may need warmth on the points, this stimulates the flow of blood and Qi.
How Does It Feel?
The sensation most people feel with the needles is often described as a mild, dull, heavy ache. On some points, the sensation is like a pinch. We do our best to make your acupuncture comfortable.
What If I’m Afraid Of Even Tiny Needles?
Pressure, magnetism or infra red can be used on points instead. We also use many other ways to get you healthy, please just ask.
Diagnosis
Classical acupuncturists train for many years to be sensitive to the flow of Qi, and to the diagnostic signs given off by patients when Qi is imbalanced, in order to be aware of exactly what is needed for each patient.
Diagnosis is more of an inquiry, a profound, respectful communication with the subliminal intelligence of the body, mind and spirit. It is far less about collecting information. Although it appears very much like a normal conversation.
Responses to treatment
These vary, according to your level of health, severity of the main problem and your lifestyle. A general rule is a month of treatment for every year of being ill. A month’s treatment will vary from 1 to 12 visits depending on how critical the situation is. Most people report feeling much better overall, more relaxed, having more energy, more “Joi de vivre”.
Training as an acupuncturist
There are many well established acupuncture colleges in the U.S.. We highly recommend the Academy For Five Element Acupuncture.
